The Argentine Apertura kicked off over the weekend and it did so in a way that perfectly encapsulates the state of football in that country. While Juan Roman Riquelme prepared to take a corner kick during Boca Juniors' visit to Olimpo, several of the home fans decided to take the opportunity to spit on one of the country's legends.
Riquelme, being the classy guy that he is, didn't lose his cool and even chuckled at one point before wiping off his face. After the match, which ended in a scoreless draw, he shrugged off the incident.
"People are used to doing this in our country and nothing surprises (you)," the creative midfielder told reporters.
That's just depressing. You know Argentine football is in desperate need of sweeping changes when fans spitting on players is dismissed by the victim as just something people are used to doing.
