At Sunday's Pocono race, both Dale Earnhardt Jr. and 48 crew chief Chad Knaus expressed concern and support for "Miss Mary" Hendrick, mother of Rick Hendrick. Now we know why. Sadly, Mrs. Hendrick passed away on Monday afternoon at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Miss Mary, who was 88, owned the No. 25 Chevy in the Sprint Cup series from 2005 to 2007; the next year, she took over ownership of the No. 5. Under her ownership, the 5 won seven races; Mark Martin had the lion's share of those in 2009 with his five-win, Cup runner-up season.
Along with her husband, "Papa Joe," Mary Hendrick was the recipient in 2004 of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina's highest award for civilian service. Condolences to the entire Hendrick family in their time of loss.
